Thaumatrope

Thaumatrope
John Ayrton Paris, 1825
History:The invention of the thaumatrope, whose name means "turning marvel" or "wonder turner," has often been credited to the astronomer Sir John Herschel.  However, it was a well-known London physicist, Dr. John A. Paris, who made this toy popular.  Thaumatropes were the first of many optical toys, simple devices that continued to provide animated entertainment until the development of modern cinema.
How it works:
A thaumatrope is a small disc, held on opposite sides of its circumference by pieces of string.  An image is drawn on each side of the disc, and is selected in such a way that when the disc is spun, the two images appear to become superimposed.  To spin the disc, one string is held in a hand, and the disc is rotated to wind the string.  Then, both strings are held, and the disc is allowed to rotate. Gently stretching the strings will ensure that they continue to unwind and rewind.  This motion causes the disc to rotate, first in one direction and then in the opposite.  The faster the disc rotates, the greater the clarity of the illusion.
Although the thaumatrope does not produce animated scenes, it relies on the same persistence of vision principle that other optical toys use to create illusions of motion.  Persistence of vision is the eye's ability to retain an image for roughly 1/20 of a second after the object is gone. In this case, the eye continues to see the two images on either side of the thaumatrope shortly after each has disappeared.  As the thaumatrope spins, the series of quick flashes is interpreted as one continuous image.
One example of a thaumatrope has a tree with bare branches on one side, and on the other, its leaves.  When spun, the tree appears to be full of leaves.  Another example has a bird on one side, and a cage on the other.  When spun, the bird appears to be in its cage.  The bird-cage pair of images were used on the first thaumatrope, and is the most common one seen on thaumatropes today.

My 3 animation

I like this animation because its funny. It shows the different story by different team.

I also like this one because its a battle in india.

This is the best cartoon movie I ever watched.

My favorite animations - morgan monette

#1.Godzilla- Airport reveal
Godzilla 2014- The kiss of death scene

I chose these two as a tie because the animation in these two clips was amazing. The flames, the way Godzilla moves, the water, every small and big detail from the big explosions to the small bits of debris flying through the air. I am a die hard Godzilla fan with the old and the new. From the scales and bumps on Godzilla to the way his skin moves when he walks was animated perfectly.

The Jurassic Park movies was another movie that I was obsessed with as a kid. The first Jurassic Park movie was made in the early 90s, and with animation SO realistic in JP in the 90s it made you really think there was an island with dinosaurs on it.

I love marvel heros and in tv shows, the crazy character is always my favorite. Thats why when I found out about deadpool and his test footage I got really pumped. Even though its just test footage, the animation is great with detail like deadpool's moving mouth behind his mask and his ear impressions on the side of his head.
Deathigner
Deathigner is a 2D animation that consists of a few supernatural beings to death and their children attending a class on how to reap souls. The animation is very fluid, and the background art is superb. The art style for the characters are very simplistic, but very cute. Definitely something to look into.

Song of the Sea
Based off of Irish mythology, this video is based on an adventure with a girl and her brother who try to find their way home from a magical world. It's a trailer of an Irish animated movie, and indulges the viewers into falling into a world of Celtic folklore.

Tokyo Ghoul Opening: Unravel by Ling Tosite Sigure
Made for an anime created in the year 2014, the opening of Tokyo Ghoul has an excerpt from a song called "Unravel" by Ling Tosite Sigure. The colors and the details alone in this video are stunning, which contributes to the introduction.

3 Animations I Like

I enjoy this video because is shows what a lot of people do when they use internet dating sites. They lie and send false pictures, just to make themselves cool. But more often than not it's both people who are lying and creating false identities.

I like this animation because it's funny. Finding a remote that controls the pyramids, and going inside while a camel chews on the remote to switch up the face combinations is pretty funny. The idea that the Egyptians developed the technology to do that is odd.

This cartoon makes fun of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It points out all the stupid little dumb things and things that could have potentially changed the story. I like this video because it points out things that you don't notice when you watch the movie.

3 Animated Videos

Tiana Stribling

Don't Touch Pac-Man

This video is brilliant, it takes such a plain and simple thing and turns it into something hilarious and extraordinary. Not for young viewers and somewhat of a dark comedy.  I enjoy this thoroughly.

ME!ME!ME!

Most definitely not for people who are immature. Very catchy soundtrack and very well animated. This video has a very deep meaning and may take twice to watch through and actually understand it.

This is a very disturbing video. Animation is interesting and subtle, the main character obviously has some metal issues. The series is not for the week minded.

Animations I like

I like it because the blue little rabbit is cute. I also like the landscapes and how they "fall" when the bigger guy walks on them. Plus, the story is pretty nice.

I have no idea how this video is but I used to watch this show when I was little (fine, I still watch it...). I like how they are stripes on their face when they're mad or upset. It's pretty simple but it's funny.

For my third one, I can't find a video I like but it's like half movie-half animated. Arthur et les minimoys is the title. And I like their hair and their ears. Plus the mean characters are really good looking. The relation they made with reality is pretty interesting.

What do you like

This animation is just straight up awesome. I love how textured the characters and the antagonist force look. I especially like how real the 4 characters look as well.

I love how beautiful this trailer looks, the animation is spot on. I enjoy how real the dragons look. And I liked how cool the trailer was.

I like this animation alot. I like how weird it is with the figures jumping page to page. I like how simple it is

Nice animations

A flip book animation of a gun shot traveling. This animation uses different frame rates for different effects. The line drawings are sharp and clear, while being detailed.

Silent film of dinosaur replying to questions and making movements. One of the earliest animations. Also shows interaction between creator and dinosaur near the end, mixing life and animation.

Story of nature against lava set to music, from Disney's Fantasia. The movement is smooth, beautiful, and expressive. The use of color and flowing figures is gorgeous. All of this is timed perfectly to the music of Hans Zimmer

Nikita Parham Animations

I thought all of these animations were entertaining and a little bit funny.
These cartoons are really funny and really well drawn.

Nic Beaulieu Youtube Animation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUngLgGRJpo

The animation style is very simple but it gets the message across. The video is a metaphor for drug addiction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pJuY6yTNhU

The animation style is a bit more complex. The video is broken up into three parts, representing problems people face.
1)"We are slaves of the Sex and craving.
2)We are victims of the money, media, and mainstream.
3)We are hypnotized by the TV, the wordly elements and all the sedentarism on our lives."
-Fredo Diaz

What do you like...like?

Animation is a very diverse artistic form. Animation more than any other artistic form is also tied to our childhood and nostalgia.

Choose 3 Animations from Youtube or Vimeo to share with the class
and write 3-5 sentences about the animation and why you like that animation and be prepared to share it with the group.

Waking Life 2001
Directed by Richard Linklater

This movie came out in 200. When I saw it I thought that it was the perfect blend of smart and fun. It was made using rotoscoping. I hope we can watch the entire movie as a class later in the semester.

Digital Animation Syllabus

Lebanon High School
Technology/Art
Teacher: Mr. Todd Matte                           Email: tmatte@sau88.net
LHS 21st Century Learning Expectations:

Academic Expectations
Students at Lebanon High School will:
1. Read, think, and research critically and creatively.
2. Communicate effectively using a variety of means.
3. Reason logically to solve problems.

Social and Civic Expectation
4. Students at Lebanon High School will be active citizens and contribute positively to the LHS community.

Overview
This course is designed to give students an academic understanding of digital animation as well as to introduce students to basic methods and practices in making animation.  This class will use project-based learning so that the students will often work collaboratively with each other to achieve common goals and solve problems. Students will learn the fundamentals of hand drawn and digital animation and we will use group discussion as well as online discussions to critique projects in a positive, academic way. Students will use Photoshop, iMovie, Garageband, as well as paper and pencil to make dynamic time-based art.  The course will conclude with the creation of final projects in which students will develop and create an animated short in a medium of their choosing and a collaborative animation defined and implemented by the group.

Course Competencies:
1. Students will analyze and explore digital animation as an art form and a vocation.
2. Students will discover and develop talents, aptitudes, and interests related to animation.
4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of animation as it relates to digital culture, new media, and how it can impact our lives.
5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the mechanics of  animation and how it works.

Grading:

Summative assessments are assessments that demonstrate what students know or are able to do and directly relate to the course competencies. Summative assessments require that students transfer their knowledge and apply what they know in a separate task. Examples include quizzes, tests, projects, and or papers. Summative assessments will be used to determine the quarter grade.

Formative assessments help students move forward in their learning for a specific goal. Examples include verbal and written checks, activities which reinforce of skills, small daily quizzes, worksheets, and practice exercises. Formative assessments will
not be used to determine the quarter grade, but will be required work. If a student doesn’t complete a formative assessment, he/she may be referred to ATC or assigned an out of class time (before school or after school) to work with the teacher to finish the
assessment.

The semester grade will be:
Quarter One Grade- 40%
Quarter Two Grade- 40%
Final project/exam- 20%

Due dates
Late work may be accepted with teacher permission, and may be subject to a reduction in credit of no more than 10% cumulatively of the grade.

Make-up work
As stated in the Lebanon High School Handbook:
When a student returns to school following an excused absence or out-of-school suspension, the student will be granted the number of days he/she was absent to make up the work that was missed.
Use of the zero
Students who, in the opinion of the teacher, demonstrate an honest effort to complete a summative assessment task, will receive a minimum score of 50% when recorded in the grade book.
Students who, in the opinion of the teacher, do not demonstrate an honest effort to complete a summative assessment task may receive a grade of zero on that task. A zero grade on a summative assessment indicates an incomplete assignment.
Extra credit
Extra credit will not be offered. Extra credit assignments do not demonstrate that a student knows the material.
Reassessment Procedure
If a student earns a score below 70% on a summative assessment, he/she must take a reassessment. The nature of the reassessment task will be determined by the teacher. The highest grade earned will be recorded. In order to be eligible for a reassessment, a student must complete a teacher-approved action plan with due dates determined by the teacher.
If a student earns a score above 70% on a summative assessment, the opportunity for reassessment will be at the discretion of the teacher. If reassessment is permitted, the highest grade earned will be recorded. In order to be eligible for a reassessment, a student must complete a teacher-approved action plan with due dates determined by the teacher.
Reassessments will be given up to the final week before grades close each quarter and a reassessment is not permitted for the final.

Academic Tutorial Center
The Academic Tutorial Center (ATC) is available as a support for students to gain competency in their courses. ATC may be used to redo summative assessments, complete formative assessments or assignments prior to reassessment, or receive help in completing any formative or summative assessment.
Teachers may choose to work with a student prior to or in place of ATC assignment.Teachers will tell a student that he/she is being assigned to ATC, fill out an ATC slip, and give the slip to the assistant principal or guidance counselor with a description of what is to be completed by student.
The assistant principal or guidance counselor will meet with the student to review the work that must be completed, assign a date and time to serve, and distribute ATC slips to the student, ATC teacher, and the course teacher.
The student will submit work to teacher when it is completed. The work must be of a high level of quality to be accepted. The teacher will release student by signing an ATC slip.
Additional Classroom Rules:
Appropriate Computer Usage
The computers are not to be used to 1) play online games; 2) access Facebook,MySpace or any other social networking web sites; or 3) web surf for non-school related purposes. Students may receive a detention or be asked to leave the room for not complying. If a problem persists, they may lose their computer access at school for an extended period of time. Students may visit appropriate sites once their work is complete and with Mr. Todd’s permission.

Absences
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to ask Mr. Todd what assignment(s) you may have missed. Students will have as many days to make up an assignment or test for full credit as the days of excused absences. For example, one day excused absence = one extra day to submit work. No additional make-up time is available for unexcused absences.
Late work may be deducted by 10% credit. If special exceptions for late work must be made, arrangements must be made with Mr. Todd  immediately, if not in advance.
Academic Independence
In the ever changing technology world, we often have the experience of not getting something right away. Sometimes it is quite a process of trial and error. In this class, the process of learning new tasks or new programs is valued. It is expected that when you reach a point where you are unable to figure something out right away, you will continue to problem solve, collaborate, research or just try something new. Giving up without an effort is not an option.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty (also known as “cheating”) is not tolerated in our classes. The handbook outlines our Academic Dishonesty guidelines and penalties. For the first offense, a grade of ZERO will be given for the assignment, and parents and administration will be contacted by the teacher, the assignment must be redone, and the student will serve an after-hours suspension. Further offenses will be subject to more consequences as outlined in the handbook.
Behavior
At all times you should behave in a way that allows teachers to teach and learners to learn. It is expected that you will respect yourself, others and property in the classroom.
The guidelines for behavior in the handbook will be followed.

Cell Phones/electronic devices
Please use them responsibly and productively. Please refrain from wearing headphones or earbuds while Mr. Todd is talking.
