Weston's Coraline review

Coraline is an outstanding movie with its engaging story and beautiful soundtrack alone, but what really sets it apart from every movie i’ve seen is the animation style. The movie uses stop motion with hand sculpted clay puppets. The makers of Coraline didn’t need to use this technique since it takes so much time but they went for it and it definitely paid off. The stop motion animation really adds to the eerie tone the creators were going for by being a little choppy at times adding suspense. For stop motion the animation is very fluent. So smooth in fact I didn’t know it was stop motion at first, I thought it was computer generated. I think stop motion was a nice approach for the other family with the button eyes. At times such as when the other dad was chasing Coraline through the garden it was very nicely done and was a little unsettling. Coraline’s animation style has a charm i’d like to see more in movies and if it was in any other style of animation it would not be the same experience, it would be less eerie and engaging.
